Abstract

Pro-environmental behavior is defined in terms of effective and anticipated actions aimed to preserve the environment or, at least, to minimize its deterioration. These kinds of actions are a priority for guaranteeing the survival of the species and for achieving a decent way of living for human beings. Behaviorists were the first psychologists investigating factors promoting the emergence and maintenance of this kind of behaviour, since the late 60’s. Although in present time behavioral research is not predominant, in quantitative terms within environmental psychology, the presence of behavioral authors and projects in this field is vigorous. Yet, a renewed effort is required to consolidate this approach, in order to provide objective, powerful, and effective answers to why people conserve or damage the environment. This paper briefl y summarizes the behaviorist trajectory in the beginnings, development and consolidation of environmental psychology and its searching for explanations of pro-environmental behavior. It is also a reflection about what to investigate from this perspective, and what opportunities and challenges exist for behavioral environmental psychologists within this psychological area.
