Abstract

Facing some of the pessimistic political diagnoses which emphasize the role of religious, ethnic and national elements as sources of the conflicts that the world is experiencing towards the end of the century, this article deals with the peace process in the Middle East, challenging the unavoidable fulfillment of those visions. The analysis of the interaction between the international and the regional level, as well as the one pertaining to the interplay between the political, economical and cultural dimensions stand behind the explanation of the motivations, interest and demands of each of the actors in the peace negotiations. Simultaneously, it explores the way in which structural changes as well as a new pragmatism widened the conditions for the development of political will.
