THE INTERNATIONAL MONETARY AND FINANCIAL CRISIS THAT BEGAN IN THAILAND ON JULY 2, 1997 SPREAD OVER RAPIDLY OTHER EMERGING MARKET ECONOMIES IN EAST ASIA AND TRANSITION ECONOMIES, AND EVEN TO SOME OF THE INDUSTRIALIZED COUNTRIES. IN TERMS OF BOTH ITS SCOPE AND ITS IMPACT, THE WORLD ECONOMY IS EXPERIECING THE MOST SERIOUS MONETARY AND FINANCIAL CRISIS SINCE THE BREAKDOWN OF BRETTON WOODS SYSTEM IN THE EARLY 1970S. THESE INFLUENCES WERE MUCH MORE GLOBAL THAN THE OTHER CRISES WORLD ECONOMY HAS SEEN THE PAST TWO OR THREE DECADES.
