Abstract

The book Afectaciones de la pandemia a las poblaciones rurales en México is part of a collection of fifteen collective volumes dedicated to exploring, from the social sciences and humanities, the impacts of the covid pandemic, the most surprising and lethal global health crisis in little more than a century, that is, since the Spanish flu of 1918, which was devastating in so many parts of the world, including Mexico, which was experiencing the ravages of the Revolution that began in 1910. As the rector of the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México points out, the research gathered in those fifteen volumes should remain in the memory and serve for decision making in the face of the health emergencies that will come and become social contingencies. Something that, as we know, did not happen with the 1918 flu, which practically disappeared from the collective memory until this new pandemic forced the exhumation of what happened at the end of the 1920s. Perhaps the First World War and the Mexican Revolution were so shocking that they overshadowed traumatic events such as that deadly pandemic.
