Critical Review of the Book: 'The Age of Translation,' by Antoine Berman
Main Article Content
Abstract
Antoine Berman, translator and thinker on translation, dedicated much of his academic work to translating and interpreting the thought of Walter Benjamin, a German philosopher who wrote the most famous essay on literary translation in the 20th century: Die Aufgabe des Übersetzers (1923), or in translation, The Task of the Translator. In this critical review, we gather the most relevant aspects of Berman's commentary on Benjamin's thought, which is itself a translation. That is to say, the book is characterized by placing translation at its core, highlighting that a meticulous study of a text in a foreign language was only made possible through the intimate contact with language that translating offers. The result, therefore, consists of nine notebooks in which the French thinker unfolds unprecedented insights into Benjamin's translational conception of this and, consequently, other essays by the author, while also emphasizing translation as a profound critical, philosophical, and pedagogical exercise.
