Un acercamiento a la región del Caribe: su importancia estratégica y económica

Abstract
The Caribbean has been a very important zone, both historically and strategically, since it was considered the opne door to the Americas. The Spanish conquerors thought whoever dominated this portion of the ocean would control the Americas. Henceforth, the United States took away this dominion from Spain, during the Spanish-American War in 1898. In present times, within the globalization process and regionalization of the area, the Caribbean zone, re-acquires back its relevance. This study pretends to analyse how a change took place in its importance within the region, ever since the Cold War ended, from a geostrategic to a geoeconomic interest, combined to the complex characteristic of the zone, turned the region even more interesting. Through this article the author tries to reach the diverse conceptual accuracies about the zone and performs a historic recovery of the most important events of this region, with the goal of the deep understanding on the current roll that this region develops and the problems that it has to face. Finally, the author points out that this region goes through difficulties and there is one way to solve them by finding its own alternatives even if they do not match to the imported patterns.
