Geometry of Opposition in Ancient Mesoamerica

Abstract

The geometry involved in the creation of symbols that represent the concept of opposition in a culture is of paramount importance, since they lay the ideological foundations upon which the social group abides by and identifies itself. On the other hand, the geometry of opposition is also the substratum of the formal structures with which the social group gives meaning to and harmonizes the objects it designs and produces. Mesoamerica, from the moment of its encounter with Hispanity, has been subjected to theoretical-referential concepts that affect the correct appreciation of its development; the western cultural tradition in which the researchers who study it are formed and develop usually influences, or biases, the results of their evaluation and appreciation regarding its development and the objects they produced.
