Abstract

We transcribe on this paper an extensive mythical totonaco story about the creation, picked up in 1985. Its principal characters are: the Sun, the Moon and Venus. They are imagined as the "three hearts" (tutu na cu), according to the last versions, they are the ancestors of this ethnic group and its name was taken from them. The text begins with the discovery of a hot stone that contained a radiant egg that was the seed of the light; upon breaking it, a young girl picked up this seed from the waters, she took it with her teeth and got pregnant. As a consequence, twins were born and they became the Sun and the Moon. The myth also refers to the regeneration of corn, the origin of children, and the religious rites practiced nowadays by the totonaco. It is interesting to see the resemblance of some of the passages of this myth with ancient Mesoamerican mythology and also with ihe mythological beliefs in other indigenous towns.
