Abstract
A panoramic overwiew of the extensive literature indicates the existence of data supporting a general -increase of 1 cm per decade (or 1 inch Per generation) rn the last five or six generations. In contrast, there is some contrary evidence indicating: 1. That there has been practically no generalized increase at all. 2. Ouantifiying the increase at much less. 3. Showing that outside kwashiorkor conditions, rather poor
nutrition is not an overriding factor in the attainment ot final stature, The conclusion is arrived at that the general secular trend in stature. is much less spectacular than has been maintained, that it is not so general, that it is mainly due to the increase of stature of "les petits tailles", and that whatever the betterment it is due-to non-specifed living conditions rather than to non-specified genetic factors.
