Abstract

New images of “otherness” as well as cultural differences which Western societies generate through mass media are analyzed as seen in the case of the Spanish press. In a supposed global village, Western societies express a need for the most exotic and far-off images of human beings, which are then presented to an audience subjected to the most severe cultural homogenization process. The “good savage”, wildness, cannibals, primitive horde evocations, human subspecies, androgynists and hermaphrodites, etc., form the main character gallery in the process of recuperation or transformation of the old images from the Indian villages and other exotics.
