Abstract

Contrary to what most historians of archaeology believe, it was not Thomas Jefferson who started archaeological research in the Americas. In 1875 in Mexico, Carlos de Siguenza y Gongora had done excavations in Teothihuacan. His works was a long tunnel in the piramid of the moon, as the result of a series of hypothesis that he had proposed. The tunnel itself later became subject of speculation, until it was covered at the beginning of this century.
