Abstract

Obsidian played a major role in prehispanic Mexico, Sierra de las Navajas, in the mexican state of Hidalgo has had a most important place as a source of this material. An archaelogical survey of these mines has enabled the authors to propose a model for the production and circulation of obsidian in Classical Mesoamerica. Through the survey some major points of the model have been tested and shown to be true. Other aspects remain to be tested. Obsidian trade in Mesoamerica is important to help understand the development of important sites such as Tula or Teotihuacan.
