Abstract
This article deals with Joseph Neumann's life and activity in the far mexican Northwest during nea¡ly 52 yean (1681-1732). He was a member of the Society of Jesus in the Bohemian Province, and asked to be sent to Mexico to work among the Tarahumara Indians of Chihuahua. The study is divided in four parts; a biographical sketch, his Tarahumara life, ethnographer of the
Tarahumares, and historian of the Indians uprisings in the XVII
and XVIII centuries.
