Abstract

The Mexican historian Ricardo Pérez Montfort states in this essay that "the vast region which we know today as America is considered a space relatively identifiable, in geographical as in cultural terms." About the construction of a general reference capable of covering a world so complex and diverse, the author proposes a broad approximation to its historical development, appealing to the transformations of authentic popular values, capable not only of generating particular regional identities but also knowledge and criticism of the multiple American popular cultures.
