Abstract

In this essay, María Salvadora Ortiz, Costa Rican philologist and diplomat, lets us see the importance of this figure, and of the thought and work of Cuba in the struggles for liberty for Latin America and the Caribbean, and for the construction of its cultural identity. "In Marti's Our America is the strong affirmation of the uniqueness of our lands, the major basis of his ideals", he says. He adds later: "José Martí, in his ethics and aesthetics, confronts us with the search for several paths toward the realization of Utopia, and with questions which are still current today".
