Abstract

In relation to the Third International Congress of the Spanish Language in Rosario, a few months ago, the Argentinean writer Rodolfo Alonso recalls in this article a key figure from the generation of 1837 who also could be visionary about these topics, the writer Juan María Gutiérrez, who would become President of the Universidad de Buenos Aires. "The singular episode of his resignation to accept the designation as a member of the Real Academia Española, shines forth —says Alonso— as an instant of first order for our national culture."
