Abstract

Uruguay is a country that has emerged from a fight against a dictatorship and the four neoliberal governments that followed with a flaming progressive, leftist, government, and a national soccer team that plays a fundamental role in its identity. Uruguayan poet Saúl Ibargoyen tries to find in this article an answer to the unusual performance of his country´s team in the recent World Cup, evoking the “maracanazo” of 1950 that represents in a certain way the triumph of David (Uruguay) against Goliath (Brazil); the archetype of the weak facing the powerful.
