Abstract

Objective: clinically characterize peritoneal dialysis associated to peritonitis (pdad) and identify microorganisms present in this disease. Methods: cross-sectional study. From January 2013 to December 2015, information on clinical records was obtained about socio-demographic, clinical and laboratory variables, of 34 patients over 18 years old who were hospitalized with a diagnosis of continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis associated to peritonitis in the Regional General Hospital No.1 in Charo, Michoacán, Mexico. The data were presented at averages, standard deviation for continuous variables and frequency percentage for categorical variables. Results: the etiology of end-stage renal disease (erd) was diabetic nephropathy in 15 patients (44.1%), unknown in 11 (32.4%), arterial hypertension in 7 (20.6%), and a Polycystic Kidney (2.9%). The isolated microorganisms were Staphylococcus epidermidis in 14 patients (41.2%), Escherichia coli in 8 (23.5%), and Enterococcus faecalis in 6 (17.6%); there was antimicrobial resistance to macrolides, ciprofloxacin, and third generation cephalosporin. 19 patients (55.9%) required hospital stay for more than seven days; 14 (41.2%) result in change of the dialytic mode, and 6 (17.6%) died. Conclusion: the pdad increases during hospitalization, morbidity and mortality in patients with erd; Staphylococcus epidermidis was the most frequently isolated organism. It is important to educate population on prevention, as well as the family physician participation who must promote a greater linkage with the second level care.
