Adherence to Treatment and its Relationship with Metabolic Control in Patients with Diabetes Mellitus Type 2, in a Family Medicine Unit in Cuernavaca, Morelos, Mexico

Abstract

Objective: determine the relationship between adherence to treatment and metabolic control in patients with diabetes mellitus type 2 of the Diabetimss program in a Family Medicine Unit in Cuernavaca, Morelos, Mexico. Methods: cross-sectional and analytical study. Sample of 178 patients who attended the Diebetimss program from August to September 2016. The socio-demographic and clinical characteristics questionnaire was applied with prior signed informed consent, clinics and the adherence to treatment scale in diabetes mellitus type 2-version III was applied; information on biochemical parameters of clinical records was obtained with the purpose of determining metabolic control in patients. For univariate analysis, central tendency measures, percentages and frequencies were used; the χ2 statistical test was used for bivariate analysis. Results: from the 178 patients, 65.73% were female; 46.07% were from 52 to 67 years old; 41.57% had less than five years of disease progression; 26.40% had an oral hypoglycemia treatment. 62.92% had medium adhesion to treatment, patients with low adhesion were not reported; 44.94% presented metabolic control; 84.8% with high adherence showed metabolic control and 78.6% with average adherence presented no metabolic control. The association between metabolic control and adherence to treatment was significant with a p-value of 0.000. Conclusions: The degree of adherence is determinant for diabetes mellitus type 2 metabolic control, considering that the type of treatment, the years of evolution and the presence of other comorbidities influence it. The majority of patients presented no metabolic control, despite presenting a medium adherence to treatment.
