Abstract

Objective: to classify cognitive impairment in the elderly with type 2 diabetes mellitus (dm2) attending to a Family Medicine Unit (fmu) in Mexico City. Methods: cross-sectional study conducted from March to June 2018. 139 patients with dm2, both genders, 60 years old or over with no diagnosis of dementia or cognitive impairment were included. Folstein’s Mini Mental questionnaire was used to classify the degree of cognitive impairment. Results: in moderate cognitive impairment, women accounted for 7.2% (n=10). The elderly who had been diagnosed with dm2 for six to ten years reported 5% of mild cognitive impairment (n=7) and those with a diagnosis more than ten years represented 5.8% (n=8). Systemic high blood pressure was the comorbidity most associated with dm2 to develop severe cognitive impairment at 4% (n=6). Conclusions: the most affected and the highest percentage in mild and moderate cognitive impairment, were women; the factors associated with the increased risk of developing it were more than six years of evolution of the dm2 diagnosis and its association with systemic arteria hypertension.
