Nutritional Status Assessment in Patients with Diabetic Neuropathy in Primary Care

Abstract

Objective: to assess the nutritional status of patients with diabetic neuropathy attended in a family medicine unit in Mexico City. Methods: descriptive cross-sectional study, 238 patients with a diagnosis of diabetic neuropathy participated. Nutritional status was assessed using the Mini Nutritional Assessment sf (MNA - SF ) instrument. Measures of central tendency and dispersion were used, as well as frequencies and percentages.


Results: 46.6% of the participants were predominantly male, with a mean age of 64.4 years. The mean score obtained in the MNA-SF questionnaire was 10.9. It was identified that 47.9% of the studied population was at risk of malnutrition, 45.4% showed normal nutritional status and 6.7% showed malnutrition.


Conclusion: patients with diabetic neuropathy presented a high prevalence of risk of malnutrition, the assessment of malnutrition should be done continuously in patients who have complications associated with diabetes within the primary care level.
