Abstract
This article offers a brief overview of conceptions regarding the origin, shape, and size of our galaxy and how they were changed by the discovery of interstellar absorption to evolve into our present-day model of a flattened and rotating disk of stars and gas, surrounded by a tenuous spherical halo and adorned with spiral tendrils.
