Necoxtla is a nahuatl-speaking community in the Sierra Madre Oriental, in the center-eastern region of the Gulf state of Veracruz. In this study, we present the frequency of ABO and Rh (C, -c, -D, -E, and –e) blood groups in native adults from Necoxtla who were also children and grandchildren of Necoxtla natives. All subjects gave informed consent. Blood groups were typed with agglutination techniques. Our results show that the Necoxtla population has a very significant Amerindian component, since the only ABO blood group found was 0. We also found a high frequency of the CDe haplotype and no presence of the cde haplotype. These haplotypes are characteristic of most Amerindian populations. In contrast, our results are significantly different from those obtained in the neighbouring community of Ixhuatlancillo, which show a higher frequency of mixture with the Caucasian population.
