Abstract

This paper deals with a historical perspective of physical anthropology in Cuba, its main characteristics and contributions are emphasized. It also recognizes theoretical and methodological influence from intelectual traditions of different regions of the world. The influence of German, French, North American, Russian, Spanish and Mexican physical anthropology is underlined. From a historical perspective, there are four main periods of development. As a particular feature of contemporary Cuban physical anthropology an interest for applying scientific knowledge to social practices, particularly related to human ontogenetic processes is highlighted.
