Abstract

This is a study of factors contributing to abandonment of exclusive breastfeeding (ebf) in 122 women aged 14-44, in Merida, Mexico, after hospital discharche, after delivery, the first, third and sixth month of babie's extrauterine life. We found that there was a steady decrease in the prevalence of ebfin the first (34 %), third (16 %) and sixth (4 %) month. The main reason for abandonment of ebfattributable to the child was “the child does not fill” with 47.8, 12.8 and 5.9 % in the first, third and sixth month, respectively; among the factors attributable to the mother were mentioned the “restarting of job activities” with 7.6, 4.2 and 0.8 % in those same months.
