Abstract

In order to study the alcoholic process that leads to cirrhosis, all deaths due to alcoholic liver cirrhosis between 1997 and 2002 in Mineral del Chico, in the State of Hidalgo, were identified. Verbal autopsies and interviews with family members of the cases were done, to learn about life history and the course of the sickness. Family members of 43 cases were interviewed. The average age at death was 56 years, ranging from 28 to 88. 35 cases were men and eight women. Being a peasant was the main occupation, with periods of other activities such as construction work. This country lacks job opportunities, existing high migration. Pulque consumption continues to be a common practice, starting at young ages. Beer and rum-like liquor are also used at large scale.
