Abstract

This paper focuses on the osteotaphonomic analysis of 30 burials excavated in the Maya Postclassic city of Chakan Putún (Champotón). The depositional and taphonomic attributes of the burials document funerary practices and the extrafunerary behavior involving the processing of the human body. The methods and techniques employed, along with the principles of deposition and cultural marks on the bone offer a new perspective for the evaluation of the ritual Maya body manipulation in the Yucatán Peninsula during the Postclassic, a line of research still relatively unexplored in this Mesoamerican region.
