Abstract

This paper analyses the problem of self-knowledge in the philosophy of Jean-Jacques Rousseau. This is accomplished through four topics in Reveries of the solitary walker: autobiography, fiction, pastoral tradition and mysticism. The problem of self-knowledge responds to Rousseau’s basic philosophical concern: to learn what human being is. From these four starting points, then, the aim is to explore the possibilities and limitations of such knowledge.
