Families that accept and accompany their trans* children. An approach to their experiences
Main Article Content
Abstract
This article outlines affirmative support as an approach to processes where families of trans children assist their children in order to evaluate the effects of affirmative support in relation to the emotional health of said trans children. The project at hand, which stems from my doctoral thesis, is qualitative in nature with a descriptive scope, and it situates itself within the tradition of feminist epistemologies. Both method and methodology center narrative and narrativity. For this study, four trans children and their family members participated during 2018 and 2019 in Mexico City. The results confirm existing research suggesting that families who carry out affirmative support foster closeness, trust and positive communication with their children. Developing diverse coping and negotiation strategies, these processes generate mutual learning potentials for families and children alike. The families strengthen the emotional health of their children through trans-affirming activities such as favoring a positive understanding of trans lives and encouraging their participation in safe spaces that diversify accounts of trans lives and work to generate peer support networks of care and mutual aid.
