Abstract

If we talk about eating as an object of study, it is necessary to consider the organism as a biological system which receives feedback from responses highly conditioned by different factors such as psychological, social, and cultural aspects that make it more complex and, in some cases, a source of conflict which generates disordered eating. The presence of disordered eating behaviors has been documented in ancient cultures and their frequencies have shown variations in history. However, the spiritual motivation often described in ancient cultures, contrast with the desire for thinness that is currently present in most of the people who perform unhealthy eating behaviors.
