Abstract

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of biofeedback and relaxation training to reduce anxiety and stress in patients with Chronic Kidney Disease, using a cognitive-behavioral treatment. There were eight patients from the Nephrology area of Hospital Juarez de Mexico, all of them were evaluated using two instruments (IDARE and a stress subjective scale) before and after the program was applied. All the participants received eight sessions of treatment; during each they received information about biofeedback and relaxation. Every patient could visualize his (her) own blood pressure and heart rate measures; all of them reduced his (her) own blood pressure and heart rate measures, and these reductions were statistically significant. Patients showed significant reductions in the anxiety and stress scales, so we conclude that combined relaxation training and biofeedback showed efficacy to reduce disease related anxiety and stress.
