Abstract

This research had as an objective to know how an individual with a low grade in the Lazarus and Folkman (1984) Scale of Copying Styles (SCS) survived after a HIV diagnose. We were interested in knowing: What has that person done to cope that diagnose? For that, we used qualitative methodology and interview to understand their behavior from their frame of reference.  Results showed that life attitude is an important determiner, it encompass such things as the positive evaluation that accepts negative aspects and the actions that promote a better life quality. This involves enjoying things that may result unimportant for others. The interview revealed that this people copes difficult situations. Responsibility was found as a strong copying style. This fact is at variance with what SCS has shown. In spite of the negative diagnose people keep their goals and finds ways to achieve them. Another important fact was the encouragement of friends and specially their mates, which give support and motivation. This is as Lyubomirsky (2008) mentioned, people with good relation with mates have pride, satisfaction, love, and respect, and better because an improvement of their immunologic system (especially in people with HIV), they are better leaders and keep social compliance (as was seen in the interview). It is important not to use quantitative methods exclusively, but include qualitative ones that give a deep vision of situations. This participant developed empirically strategies now labeled as Positive Psychology, and can be taught to seropositive patients.
