Factorial composition from the Beck depression inventory in mexican elders

Abstract

Depression is considered as one of the main mental health problems suffered by over 65 years of age, Also, represents an important psychological impact on people's life, family and environment. Nevertheless, its evaluation in the office is not clear because the somatic disorders produced by prescription drugs on elder population may hinder diagnose; as the social stigmatization of relating old age with depression. The purpose of this study was to determine the factor composition of the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) on a sample of 203 Mexican elders. Explotary Factor Analysis produced six factors in BDI: cognitive disorders, performance decline, affective deficits, negative attitude, and two somatic disorders factors. Three additional factor analyses were conducted in order to eliminate factors and items with factorial load lower than 0.40. The result was a forced factorial matrix with 18 items. Factor 1, cognitive disorders (8 items), Factor 2, performance decline (5 itmes), Factor 3 affective deficits (5 items). An explained variance of 48.79% and Cronbach alpha values of 0.822, 0.710, and 0.655. Items recommended for elimination were libido loss and weight loss because they belong to somatic disorders; and the item negative self-image because it is considered to be associated with negative perception in old age. It was concluded that the relevant factors in the evaluation of depression, Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), Mexican elders.
