Abstract

The article analyzes representations made by academics about professional psychology practice and the meaning they give to their social identity. As a case of study, qualitative and interpretative methodologies were used to study academics' representations about status and social prestige of psychology, its occupational spaces, roles and professional practice. It was found that for most of the academics who were interviewed, psychology has not yet obtained a defined identity in society, they have a static and historical view of profession, with little knowledge of their professional field, and their social and professional projection. It is concluded that academics have profesionalized in teaching, but have separated themselves from psychology's professional services; they have a specific perspective of it, and give more importance to theoretical and methodological contents in professional teaching. It is proposed to open curricular spaces to academics obtained knowledge's and professional competences from psychology.
