Abstract

This review was made to examine some aspects of studies that describe the function of social support networks in elders, as this age group is increasing in number and it has been reported that the social network is relevant for physical and psychological well being (Rowe & Kahn, 1987; Jackson, 2006). We searched in articles published between 1996 and 2007 in four databases (EBSCO, Elsevier, proQUEST, and sciELO) and with inclusion criteria, substantive, methodological and intrinsic to network variables. We found research done in several countries, outstanding the United States. One of the main problems that researchers in this area find is the lack of agreement in relation to the elements that comprise the network, an aspect that reduces the necessary and measurable advances. we suggest the common usage of several conceptual and methodological elements necessary to the study of social support networks for elders that may help to reorder and to clarify current knowledge in this area.
