Abstract

Abstract

In the present study, we sought to identify whether there is a relationship between the factors that increase exposure to violence and propensity to violence, with aggressive and violent-criminal behaviors in the Mexican youth population, as suggested by the Situational Action Theory (SAT). To do this, a descriptive and inferential statistical design was chosen using self-reported information in a survey with 471 adolescents detected with and without risk. The results show a significant association between violent-criminal behaviors and propensity factors such as addictive behaviors or self-concept, as well as exposure factors such as family support and risk exposure with peers. A significant relationship was also found between the aggressive behavior subscale and criminal behavior. These findings provide empirical evidence for the SAT in the Mexican population, highlight the importance of situational factors, yield elements for theoretical integration with the evidence-based psychology, and provide tools for targeting youth at risk, for the design of prevention programs.
