Abstract

In this article we highlight the importance of considering local perspectives on space perception and experimentation in the context of academic research on migration. Reflecting on some studies that were conducted on remittances, we will present the issue of houses and domestic spaces in the context of remittances sent by migrants to their home communities from the United States. We finally emphasize the importance of considering the local perspective to understand the reasons why yucatec migration to the United States results in the construction of new domestic spaces in migrants’ home countries through an analysis of some academic studies on the concepts of home, property and domestic space among Yucatec Maya in the colonial period and nowadays. In doing so, we are not suggesting an ethnic uniformity at regional or diachronic level.
