Abstract

TO PROVE THAT O3 IN THE BREATHING AIR CAN INDUCE ACUTE RESPIRATORY INFECTIONS AND, CONSEQUENTLY, AFFECT CARDIOVASCULAR DISEASES, A STUDY OF 80 PEOPLE (HALF OF THEM SUFFERING FROM THE HEART) LIVING CLOSE TO THE MONITORING STATIONS, WAS CARRIED OUT. THE FIRST STEP WAS TO DETECT THE DAYS THAT IN PREVIOUS YEARS AS WELL AS IN 1999 AND 2000 SHOWED THE HIGHEST O3 CONCENTRATIONS WERE RECORDED AND DETERMINE THE CARDIAC INDEX, O2 SATURATION AND CENTRAL PULMONARY RESISTANCE ON THE PATIENTS BOTH IN WINTER AND SUMMER PERIODS. PREDOMINANT CARDIOVASCULAR DISEASES IN THE GROUP WERE HYPERTENSION, ISCHEMIC CONDITIONS AND ARRHYTHMIC SITUATIONS. REGRESSION ANALYSIS AND F STATISTIC TESTS SHOWED THAT O3 MAY BE CONSIDERED RESPONSIBLE OF AGGRAVATION IN 70% OF THE CASES.
