Abstract
Background: The measurement of intra-abdominal pressure (IAP) is the new modality of monitoring in critical patients. The IAP can be related with intra-abdominal hypertension (IAH) and abdominal compartmental syndrome (ACS), the last year has been associated with increased mortality in the critical care units. In the last few years, there has been more research of the physiopathology of ACS. This has improved the early and prompt diagnosis and the treatment with decompressive laparotomy. Case: 57 years old men of exploratory laparotomy for postoperative bowel perforation with data from septic shock. Development of IAH which evolves with ACS and renal dysfunction to pulmonary symptoms improved after completion of decompressive laparotomy. Conclusion: The measurement of intra-abdominal pressure is a useful tool for early detection and timely management of the IAH and the ACS in order to avoid complications of this entity. The primary objective of this report is emphasize to the medical community about of the importance to the IAH and ACS in the critically ill patients.
