DETERMINANTES DEL DESEMPEÑO DE LA TECNOLOGÍA DEL MICROCRÉDITO INDIVIDUAL

Abstract
Las instituciones de microfinanzas, de manera creciente, han venido incorporando el microcrédito individual a su cartera de préstamos. Se ha afirmado que esto representa una evolución positiva en la misión de las microfinanzas. Para analizar la tecnología del microcrédito individual y su capacidad de contribuir al desarrollo financiando microempresarios, superando las limitaciones del microcrédito grupal, en este trabajo construimos un modelo simple de decisión del prestatario en un contexto de información asimétrica. Concluimos que, a pesar de no haber sido referido en la literatura, el mecanismo crucial para enfrentar los problemas de selección adversa y riesgo moral es el sistema de cobranza; que esta tecnología no es eficiente para ofrecer un producto cuyo costo sea compatible con la rentabilidad media de los micronegocios; por ello no lo utilizan los microempresarios. Mostramos las posibles causas que pueden explicar por qué esta tecnología es más costosa y riesgosa que la tradicional del microcrédito grupal.
