Abstract

The main objective of this study was to investigate the predictive ability of a psychological model regardingadherence behaviors. Participants. The sample included 105 individuals living with HIV/AIDS inNorthwest, Mexico, who answered two self-administered instruments: a) Psychological Variables andAdherence Behaviors and b) Stress-Related Situations. Data were analyzed with a multiple regressionmodels. Results showed that 63.8% reported an adherence of 100% to ART, while 36.2% did not show fulladherence (x2 [1] = 8,010; p < 0,005). The regression model found three variables of the psychologicalmodel as predictors of adherence behavior: low levels of stress in its modality of tolerance to ambiguity, high motivation and optimal current competencies (F [3, 101] = 19,599; p < 0,001). Conclusions. It wasconcluded that three psychological variables from a psychological model related with the mediate (stressrelated situations) and immediate (motives and competencies) history influence the adherence behavior. Therelevance of these variables in the design of intervention programs is discussed.
