Abstract

The article explores the pressures and directives that powerful transnational institutions like the World Bank dictate for higher learning policymaking in Mexico. The article criticizes the government's lack of creativity and freedom to forge an educational policy that is truly responsive to national challenges and does not simply translate the privatizing schemes for education imposed by these organisms. The main cause of today's conflict in the UNAM lies within this phenomenon. The latter pan of the essay is most original in exploring the possible outcomes of the conflict.
