Racismo: los coqueteos con la doncella

Abstract

Is there racism in Mexico? Constitutionally there are no racial distinctions, however the notion of race lurks in the shadows of the country's consciousness and shows its face in the vilest authoritarian expressions. The author contends that racism in Mexico is camouflaged as "cultural conflict” or "territorial repossession"; the crossing of the races has reinforced the "spirit of a primeval race", and this concept translates either into severe discrimination, or extreme advocacy of the native people and communities. In either case, the “other” is ostracized and invisible but permanent barriers are raised between human beings.
