Abstract

In the construction of his Theory of Communicative Action, first appeared on 1982, Jurgen Habermas focused his attention on the concept of “communicative rationality" as the key point for understanding society. In the building of this theory Habermas has a corresponding range of approaches with linguistic, philosophical analysis and hermeneutics, as well as system theory, and some others.

All this wide-ranging inquiry often hinders the understanding of the object he discusses to the extent that sometimes it has been understood as a history of theory. This article attempts to go further in Haberma's own understanding and insights in regard with the following considerations: 1. Theory of rationality; 2. The construction of a new concept of society based on a dualism that is divided between “system and world of life”; 3. The founding of a theory of modernity.
