Abstract

The article deals with the challenges and achievements of the European Union to 50 years after the signing of the Treaties of Rome, thus becoming the regional integration process in the most successful of world. Based on common values, the 27 States that today make up the bloc have built a community with shared institutions and relations of interdependence that today give it the status of key actor in the international system. Thus, the author refers to the successes of the European Union, the opportunities that are emerging for the twenty-first century, the aspects to consider on its relations with the outside world and the main elements and scopes of the new Treaty of Lisbon.
