Abstract

The history and principles of Mexico’s foreign policy have shaped a multilateralism that promotes the defense of international rules and institutions. However, the proximity to the United States and the extensive trade between the two countries have conditioned their actions in the international arena, which has resulted in a cautious performance, particularly on sensitive issues such as security. This article focuses on the reasons why Mexico has had a marginal participation in initiatives such as Peacekeeping Operations and the implications that would result in a greater collaboration. To reach this goal, the work is divided into three parts: the first clarifies some theoretical points; the second deals with the foreign policy principles; the third reviews the new requirements of the current international context and develop some proposals for Mexico.
