Relationship between personality traits and love styles in Mexican adolescents

Abstract

Personality traits are endogenous dispositions that are independent of environmental influences. Love styles are ideologies that guide love attitudes and behaviors. The objectives were to identify the relationship between personality traits, love styles and gender differences in Mexican adolescents. It was a non- probabilistic sampling of 201 students in a public high school. The Inventory of the Big Five by Benet-Martínez & John¹, and the Inventory of Love Styles for Adults by Ojeda² were used. For the results, the Pearson's correlation coefficient tests, Student's T test for independent samples, 1-factor ANOVA and Tukey's post hoc were used. Women have greater Neuroticism trait and men have more agape, Eros and Ludus love styles. Whereas, Extroversion trait was not related to any love style, kindness was positively related to Storge and negatively to Eros. Than responsibility was positively to Pragma; neuroticism negatively to Storge and positively to Mania; Opening negatively to Mania and positively to Storge, Eros and Pragma. The differences among other research may be due to time differences, culture and changes in thoughts that have come out of globalization and the 21st century.
