Abstract

A NEW SPECIES OF THE BITING MIDGE OF THE GENUS FORCIPOMYIA MEIGEN, BELONGING TO THE SUBGENUS LASIOHELEA KIEFFER, IS DESCRIBED AND ILLUSTRATED BASED MALE SPECIMENS FROM CHIAPA STATE, MEXICO. FORCIPOMYIA (LASIOHELAE) ANITAE SP. NOV. IS THE FIRST RECORD OF THE SUBGENUS IN MEXICO. THIS SPECIES IS MORPHOLOGICALLY SIMILAR TO THE NEARTIC SPECIES F. (L) FAIRFAXENSIS WIRRTH, TO THE NEOTROPICAL SPECIES F. (L) INSIGNIFORCEPS MACFIE, TO THE AUSTRALIAN SPECIES F. (L) CAESARIATA DEBENHAM, AS WELL AS TO F. (L) LONGINEAURA SAUDERS FROM THE PHILIPPINES. THE AUTHORS DISCUSS THE DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS OF ALL OF THESE AND OTHER NEOTROPICAL SPECIES, PROVIDING A KEY OF THE AMERICAN SPECIES BASED ON THE MALE CHARACTERISTICS.
