Abstract

The effectiveness that the discriminant functions offer is analysed when they are applied to determine the sex on individuals from a different period and geographical enviroment that the population from which the formulas were obtained. By means of some metrical variables of the humerus, the degree of sexual dimorphism of a modern series from the south of Spain, of known age and sex, is compared with a medieval population from the north of Spain. The discussion is also centred on whether there are differences that lead to consider the individuals as belonging to different populations, or these differences, on the contrary, are the result of the natural variability that characterizes the human groups.
