Abstract

This article introduces some advances from an investigation on transsexuals and transgender people’s life experiences, living in Mexico City. Their gender identity is independent from their biological sex, and, generally, they go through a process of corporal transformation (which may include their sexual reassignment), with extremely complex implications at individual social and cultural levels. For a long time, their condition has been studied from a clinical perspective. Nevertheless, it is fundamental to deal with other related aspects, from a socio cultural approach. This article focuses on family, economic and labor conditions, based on the stories narrated by four individuals who assume themselves as such, and whose particularities of life can be related to their condition, since they do not act according to sex and gender generally accepted set of rules: binary and heterosexual.
